Van Loo Sets SBU Single Season Record in Split With Hawks

Quincy, Ill. – SBU softball concluded their weekend with a doubleheader against he Quincy Hawks. The Bearcats split the day winning the first and dropping the second to move to 18-26 (7-11 GLVC) on the season.

Game 1: Win, 6-3
The Bearcats extended their winning streak to three by defeating the Hawks in game one. The scoring got started in the second inning as sophomore Jacie Frencken launched a deep two-run blast over the wall. Two innings later, Frencken did it again for her 6th homerun of the year extending the lead to 4-1. With the Hawks only scoring three runs, this ended up being the game winning home run.

Frencken's two hits led the team but Jalaya Rie, Keeley Elsea, Taylor Howard, Ashley Gruben, and Ava Minton all notched one of their own. Abby Leer started on the mound pitching six innings allowing three earned runs and four strikeouts. She was relieved in the 7th by freshman Cambri Van Loo who recorded her record-breaking 5th save of the season.

Game 2: Loss, 4-9
That winning streak came to a close as the Hawks prevented SBU from a 4-0 road weekend taking game two. The game remained scoreless through the first two innings until Keeley Elsea broke through with an RBI single in the third inning. A Hawk error on the same play allowed one more runner to score giving SBU a 2-0 lead. Quincy would go on to score nine straight unanswered runs.

Gracee Brockman and Ashley Gruben led the team with two hits apiece as Elsea, Frencken, Joscelyn Bennett, and Kinleigh Kite all had one. Elsea, Kite, and Gruben were the three Bearcats to notch RBI's. Taylor Howard started on the mound throwing 5.2 innings allowing six runs recording her second loss of the season.

Southwest Baptist will return to action in nearly a week as they host Truman State University. This doubleheader will take place on April 18th, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
