Quincy, Ill. – SBU softball concluded their weekend with a doubleheader against he Quincy Hawks. The Bearcats split the day winning the first and dropping the second to move to 18-26 (7-11 GLVC) on the season.
Game 1: Win, 6-3
The Bearcats extended their winning streak to three by defeating the Hawks in game one. The scoring got started in the second inning as sophomore
Jacie Frencken launched a deep two-run blast over the wall. Two innings later, Frencken did it again for her 6
th homerun of the year extending the lead to 4-1. With the Hawks only scoring three runs, this ended up being the game winning home run.
Frencken's two hits led the team but Jalaya Rie,
Keeley Elsea,
Taylor Howard,
Ashley Gruben, and
Ava Minton all notched one of their own.
Abby Leer started on the mound pitching six innings allowing three earned runs and four strikeouts. She was relieved in the 7
th by freshman
Cambri Van Loo who recorded her record-breaking 5
th save of the season.
Game 2: Loss, 4-9
That winning streak came to a close as the Hawks prevented SBU from a 4-0 road weekend taking game two. The game remained scoreless through the first two innings until
Keeley Elsea broke through with an RBI single in the third inning. A Hawk error on the same play allowed one more runner to score giving SBU a 2-0 lead. Quincy would go on to score nine straight unanswered runs.
Gracee Brockman and
Ashley Gruben led the team with two hits apiece as Elsea, Frencken,
Joscelyn Bennett, and
Kinleigh Kite all had one. Elsea, Kite, and Gruben were the three Bearcats to notch RBI's.
Taylor Howard started on the mound throwing 5.2 innings allowing six runs recording her second loss of the season.
Southwest Baptist will return to action in nearly a week as they host Truman State University. This doubleheader will take place on April 18
th, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
