Springfield, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University women's soccer team delivered a big conference victory Wednesday evening, shutting out rival Drury University 2-0 defeating them for the first time since 2019. Behind a pair of goals from Katelynn Young and a strong defensive performance, the Bearcats improved to 6-7-3 overall and 4-6-2 in GLVC play.
Young got the Bearcats rolling in the 26th minute, finding the back of the net to give SBU an early 1-0 advantage. Just five minutes later, she struck again off an assist from Juana Fernandez Calvo, doubling the lead before halftime. The two-goal performance marked Young's second multi-goal game in the last three matches.
The Bearcat defense took care of the rest, holding Drury scoreless despite 11 shots from the Panthers. Goalkeeper Cece Alexander played all 90 minutes, recording four saves. One of those saves came in the first half diving to her right side just nudging a ball outside of the goal posts. Another play by Alexander that kept a clean sheet was later in the second half stopping a break away corralling the ball before a shot was taken. The SBU defense added a team save to preserve the shutout. Freshman Somer Staley had a big defensive game for the Bearcats playing all 90 minutes making stops on the right and left side of the field. Kenadie Limb, Emma Burton, and Jade Johnson each played 90 minutes to shut down the Drury offense.
The victory gives SBU another important three points in the GLVC standings as the Bearcats continue their push toward postseason contention. They will now play the McKendree Bearcats on senior day this Saturday at the SBU soccer field with the kickoff at 12 p.m. The senior day presentation will take place after the game.
